This is Castle Howard, one of the most beautiful places in England in my humble opinion.
Some of you may recognise it from screen adaptations of Brideshead Revisited, in which the house played as much of a starring role as any of the actors. I love it because this property is designed to both admire the surrounding countryside and complement it.
Viewed from the house, the landscaped gardens cast your eye towards the stunning countryside beyond. Meanwhile grand and curious follies – including an obelisk, mausoleum and temple – punctuate the landscape and provide viewing points of the surrounding Howardian Hills.
It makes for a fine visit even if you don’t go in the house. A stroll round the grounds takes in vistas of the house, several lakes, a wood and walled garden. There is also a farm shop selling own-grown produce and a number of cafes and restaurants.
