Good things come in small packages, and nowhere is this more true than the delightful city of Ljubljana. With a population of under 300,000 and one of the prettiest riversides in Europe, the Slovene capital is perfect for wandering. It has a vibrant cultural scene, some fantastic restaurants and is small enough to walk pretty much anywhere.
Highlights include a stroll down the Ljubljanica River, a trip on the funicular to Ljubljana Castle and seeing the rather curious Triple Bridge, pictured above. But my personal highlight was seeing the Roman ruins of Emona – the remains of a settlement established in 14AD. Having spent a few days there back in 2013, it’s definitely on my holiday hit list to go back.

Lovely – am hopefully going later this year so may ask you for tips!
Oooh. Just Ljubljana or elsewhere too? Definitely try going to Postonja Cave and Predjama Castle too! I gather Lake Bled is absolutely beautiful but not been there yet.
